DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT RULES:

STARTING THE GAME:
  • Balls will be lined up on the centerline. The referee will yell, “DODGEBALL!” to signal the start of the game.
  • Players may race to the centerline to retrieve as many balls as possible.

    THE RULES ARE SIMPLE:
    • If you hit a player with a dodgeball, they are out.
    • But if an opposing player catches your dodgeball, you are out and one of their “out” teammates can come back in.
  • If you throw a ball and it hits the floor, ceiling or wall first, the ball is dead.
  • Players will return to the court in the order they were eliminated by coming in from the back corner of the court.
  • You can deflect balls with a ball (but if you deflect it and it hits your body or your teammate, whoever the ball hit is out).
  • If you deflect a ball and it pops up, your teammate can catch it to get the thrower out. And then one of your out teammates can come back in.
  • Play within the boundaries or you’re out. The line is considered “in.” At least one foot must be “in.”

    THE “BURDEN BALL”
  • In order to prevent stalling, the team with the majority of the balls must throw at least one ball within 10 seconds.
  • If each team has 3 balls, the team with the “burden ball” must throw at least one ball within 10 seconds. The burden ball is just a ball of one specific color that the referee will determine at the beginning of the match.

    BRACKETS/MATCHES/GAMES:
  • Your team will compete against up to 3 other teams during your dodgeball tourney playing time.
  • Your total playing time will be approximately 40-50 minutes (regardless of how many teams are in the bracket).
  • A “match” consists of several dodgeball games within a set amount of time. For example: if Team A plays against Team B from 2:30-2:50pm, that 20 minute time period is your “match.”
  • The team who won the most dodgeball games within the time period, wins the “match” and will continue on in the winner’s bracket. The loser will continue on in the loser’s bracket.

    TEAMS:
  • Games are played 6-on-6 and each game usually last just a few minutes (that’s why there are several games per “match”).
  • Once a game is complete (all players from one of the teams are eliminated), you may quickly sub in other players before the referee signals the start of the next game. You cannot sub out players during a game (unless for an injury).
  • Anyone subbing out may help retrieve stray balls as long as they stay on the sidelines to do so (must also stay on their side of the centerline).

    REFEREES:
  • Games are mostly played on the honor system, which means if you get hit, go out until it's your turn to come back in.
  • Our referees are there just to help keep the game moving in a friendly manner. Do not depend on the referees to call outs.
  • NO ARGUING WITH THE REFEREES. Remember that this is just for fun and, while it is a competition, at the end of the day, we’re all friends just looking to have a fun afternoon and raise some money for a great cause!
AND THE MOST IMPORTANTLY:  HAVE FUN!!!
